Rhode Island legislators learned yesterday that Gov. Carcieri vetoed the gay funeral rights bill that passed in October.
The legislation, sponsored by Sen. Rhoda Perry and state Rep. David Segal, would have added “domestic partners” to the list of people legally authorized to make funeral, cremation or burial arrangements for their deceased partners. Heterosexual married couples already have these rights.
The Providence Journal reported that the bill was proposed after one man was unable to retrieve the body of his late partner from the state medical examiner for weeks because they weren’t married or next-of-kin.
Gov Carcieri’s veto message, said:
“This bill represents a disturbing trend over the past few years of the incremental erosion of the principles surrounding traditional marriage, which is not the preferred way to approach this issue.
“If the General Assembly believes it would like to address the issue of domestic partnerships, it should place the issue on the ballot and let the people of the state of Rhode Island decide.”
The bill defined a domestic partner as someone who was in an “exclusive, intimate and committed relationship” with the deceased person and had lived with them for at least a year. The bill also said the couple had to be financially “interdependent” by joint mortgage, shared credit card or domestic partnership contract.
Gov. Carcieri said the bill would allow the decisions of a “partner” of a year to take precedence over “traditional family members.” He said a “one year time period is not a sufficient duration to establish a serious bond between two individuals.”
Rep. Segal said Carcieri took his opposition to same-sex marriage too far. He and Sen. Perry plan to override the veto.
Segal also said, “‘I think the man is heartless and this has become a bad joke that has carried on for far too long.”
Even in death we get NOTHING!
I think that gay people should leave their spouses in the morgue and let the state pay for the burials until it is Bankrupt.
Jaime got to be in the parade today!
Niki is leading a girl scout troop again this year and because Jaime was in the troop last year, she said Jaime could march with them. Yay!!! Jaime was THRILLED!
We (me, Zak, Rick, mom and Ben) all went to watch the girls and Niki in the parade...well, and to see the parade.. We watched at the end of the parade route and when they walked by us, Jaime was waving her flag and prancing around and having a blast. It was adorable!
Niki told us that at the beginning of the parade, Jaime was trying to get all the girls to line up and march, right. LOL That's Jaime for you, little director that she is. LOL ! Cracked me up and I wish I could have seen it. Niki said they were doing really good but the troop in front of them kept stopping and they had a dog with them (nice, huh??) that kept getting tangled up with Niki's girls. But what we did see was fun enough.....:-)
Here's a bunch of pics.....yes, I know I still haven't posted the Halloween pics...I have them uploaded and I"ll post them tonight or tomorrow...yeah, yeah, yeah...famous last words. HONESTLY...this time...I really will do it! For now, enjoy these!
how CUTE is she??? I love it!
Gabby was on the other side, so you can't really see her :-( but you can see Jaime and Niki in this one.
Sistah with her troop! :-)
Halloween pics WILL be up later or tomorrow....
I decided to alter a beautiful lace pattern I found on ravelry to create a cowl for my grandmother.
I thought when I visit her December, it would be nice to bring a present, and a knitted gift will give me something to do on the train up to visit her. I thought we could spend the evening doing some knitting, and then I'll go back to London the following evening.
Here's the design so far:
she loves red so I bought the brightest, boldest red wool I could find.
The pattern seemed a little complicated at first because I couldn't figure out exactly which parts were the 'v' design and which were part of the scarf pattern the designer had chosen, but in the end I simplified it down to the basic 9 stitch repeat, which works out like this:
After casting on a multiple of 9, joining and and knitting the first row (if working in the round) or purling the first row (if working flat)
(k3, k2tog, YO, K4) repeat until end of row
purl entire row (knit, if working in the round)
K2, k2tog, YO, k1, YO, SSK, K2 until end of row
purl entire row (knit, if working in the round)
K1 k2tog, YO, K3, YO, SSK, k1 until end of row
purl entire row (knit, if working in the round)
knit entire row (knit, if working in the round)
purl entire row (knit, if working in the round)
repeat until desired length
I'll post when it's done! speaking of, my gryff scarf is almost complete but I usually remember to work on it after I'm already in bed, and as I need to confirm how much longer it needs to be by standing up, I end up working on something else instead. I have a pair of socks and my own cowl in angora to do before I leave Roma, as well as a few balls of left over wool I don't particularly want to carry home so I have a few things I can work on!
December is a busy month yet it seems like everything just comes so smoothly during this particular month.....Like every Filipino would get excited about the coming celebrations it offers and everyone learns to offer a gift with one another.....although my real wish for us would be to become humble like what Jesus had shown us from the time of His birth and until now....We should be humble enough in asking blessings from God and in giving what we have to others....We should be thankful to all the gifts God has given us....Be thankful on what we have now and do not ask for too much....and share to others the blessings He has given us....
A flurry of emails flew between the Hubs, my sister and I this morning after we received Travel Zoo's email about fab deals from British Airways. We almost pulled the trigger for Christmas in London, but plans changed. No biggie, this works out too.
So our European extravaganza is going to be shorter then I originally wanted/planned. Due to work commitments, instead of a 3.5 week blowout, we're going to shoot for two weeks BUT we're going to squeeze in a trip to the 2010 Winter Olympics to make up for the shorter European trip. Awwww yeah!
Tickets to Seattle right now are pretty cheap AND we get to stay in Seattle & Vancouver for free so it looks like we'll be going to our first Olympic Games! I'm still trying to figure out what tickets we can get events to before we book tickets, but hopefully I'll get that figured out before the end of the week.
I WANT TO GO SHOPPING OH GOD I HATE HAVING NO MONEY.
